First Umrah in Islamic History

The Muslims of Makah had the utmost desire to perform Hajj and Umrah. So, when they reached outside of Makkah, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) sent an emissary to the Makkans to clear the things out. He (PBUH) did not want to have confusions in the minds of the non- believers regarding the trip of Muslims. He (PBUH) want to do that to erase any misconception because Muslims tried to reach Makkah for a very Holy purpose and want to have a peace agreement for the betterment of both parties.

The non- believers after receiving the emissary were thoughtful, and they finally decided not to permit Muslims to enter inside the city. Muslims were not allowed to perform minor pilgrimage (Umrah) that year but were asked to come to next year for the purpose. A treaty an agreement was signed between Muslims and non- believers in regards to visiting Makkah for minor Hajj. The agreement between the two parties is referred to as the “Treaty of Hudaybiah” in history.

This treaty had numerous points regarding a peaceful living for both Muslims and non- believers. The deal was signed for ten years as a peace maintaining agreement between the two clans. But they suggested that the Muslims would come next year for the purpose, non- believers will clear the path so that the Muslims could perform the ritual peacefully.

It was dissolved after two years when one of the tribes allied with the Makkans and attacked a tribe allied with the Muslims and killed some of its members. As the primary purpose and point of the treaty was to prevent bloodshed, so there was no reason to pursue the contract after the killings

.

The Muslims had become a formidable force and so in 630 Prophet Muhammad decided to attack Makkah along with the suggestions of companions and of course by the will of Allah Almighty. He (SAW) took an army of 10000 towards Makkah and prepared the Expedition of Abu Qatadah ibn Rabi al Ansari in December to turn away the concentration from his objective of belligerent Makkah. He (PBUH) led the troop of Muslims and dispatched 8 of his men to outbreak.

On arrival of Muslims at Makkah, the leaders of Quraysh got an idea that they were not able to fight against Muslims so the leaders of the non- believer clans surrendered. They were terrified about the impending conquest of theirs. However, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was a merciful person, by his personality, he claimed forgiveness for all of the ones who had no longer wished to fight against Muslims. After entering and succeeding Makkah,

He (PBUH) said;

“This day, no accusation shall be on you. Allah Almighty will pardon you; He SWT is the Most Merciful of the Merciful. You can go away.”

This victory of Muslims is known as “Succession of Makkah” and even for today is an exemplary case to wind up the conflict without any bloodshed. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) could have taken revenge by the Arab tradition and also taking revenge in equal intensity is allowed by the religion, but he (PBUH) decided to forgive the guilty. This conflict was a particular incident in the history of Islam because due to it, Islam was established in the Arabian Peninsula, and it was the beginning of spreading the light of Islam. It was after the victory of Makkah that Islam becomes a dominant world religion.

Note: Women should complete the Tawaf in outer circles. It is required for men to complete circles, as the three with fast speed and four with normal speed.

Saee:

This act is directly related to the wife of Hazrat Ibrahim (AS) when she was running 7 times between the two hills (Safa and Marwa) for searching for water. Pilgrims follow this running method for completing this ritual.

Note: Women should complete this ritual normal speed.

Halq or Taqsir:

This is the last ritual of Umrah and after this ritual, pilgrims leave the state of Ihram.

Actually, the method of Halq is for men and the method of Taqsir is for women.

Halq means shaving the head completely and Taqsir means cutting the hairs only for one inch.

Abu Hurairah (RA) reported that Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) said:

“1 Salah (prayer) offered in my the mosque is superior to 1000 salahs (prayers) offered in other mosques except Al-Haram Mosque (Makkah).” (Bukhari)

In this mosque, pilgrims can visit the Chamber of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) where Muhammad (PBUH), Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddique (RA), and Hazrat Umar Farooq (RA) are buried - House of Hazrat Fatima (RA) who was the daughter of Muhammad (PBUH) - Riyaad-ul-Jannah (Garden of Paradise) - Mimbar of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).

2- Masjid-e-Qiblatain:

This is a very important mosque in the history of Islam because this mosque is known as the two Qiblas. After the 2nd Hijri of migration from Makkah to Madina, Hazrat Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) received instruction to change the direction of prayer from Bait ul Maqdis in Jerusalem to the Kaaba in Makkah and this is the earliest mosque along with the Quba mosque and Al-Nabvi mosque.

3 -Masjid –e- Quba:

It is the first mosque in the history of Islam. The virtue of this mosque is mentioned in Surah al-Taubah:

“Certainly a Mosque founded on devoutness from the very 1st day is more deserving that you should stand in it.”

Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) said about this mosque:

“He who purifies himself at his home and comes to Quba mosque and offers 2 rakats there will be rewarded the reward of an Umrah.”

4 -Uhud Mountain:

There are located five mosques which names are Hazrat Ali, Hazrat Umar, Hazrat Salman Farsi, Hazrat Abu Bakr, and Hazrat Saad Bin Maaz. 

6- Masjid –e- Jummah:

This mosque is situated around 1.5 miles from Al-Nabvi Mosque. Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) offered the 1st Jummah Salah (prayer) after the migration from the Makkah to Madina.

7- Jannatul Baqi:

This is a sacred graveyard because many family’s members of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) and his companions are buried here.

The 1st person who was buried in this cemetery whose name was Asad Bin Zararh (RA) after the Prophet (PBUH)’s migration to Madinah.

The aunts of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) which name was Safiyah bint Abdul Muttalib.

The relatives of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) which names are Abdullah bin Jafar (RA) & Aqeel bin Abi Talib (RA).

The wives of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) which names are Hazrat Ayesha (RA), Hazrat Hafsa (RA), Hazrat Zainab bint kuzaymah (RA), Hazrat Juwairya bin Harith (RA), Hazrat Umm Habiba bint Abu Sufyan (RA), Hazrat Safiyah bint Hayy al Akhtab, Hazrat Zainab bint Jahash, Hazrat Umme Salma bint Abu Umama (RA) and Hazrat Maymuna bint al-Harith (Ra).

The daughters of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), Hazrat Fatimah (RA), Hazrat Zainab (RA), Hazrat Ruqayyah (RA), and Hazrat Umme Kulthum (RA).

3rd Caliph, Hazrat Uthman (RA) who was also the son-in-law of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

The son of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) which name was Ibrahim (RA).

4: Use of any scents on the body or on the clothes are prohibited in the state of Ihram.

5: Men must uncover their heads.

Why is Umrah so important?

In Islam, the Umrah is 2nd holy journey after the Hajj.  Umrah removes the sins of those who perform it with full intentions. If anyone performs Umrah in Ramadan then he/she can get a great reward which is equal to the reward of Hajj. Umrah removes poverty. You make yourself a guest of Allah when you perform the Umrah’s parts as Tawaf and Sai.

Remove the Poverty_ Hazrat Ibn Abbas (RA) reported that Hazrat Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) said:

“Perform Hajj & Umrah consecutively; for they remove poverty & sin as bellows removes impurity from iron.”

Remove the Sin_ Hazrat Abu Hurairah (RA) reported that Hazrat Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) said:

“From 1 Umrah to another is the expiation for what comes in between and Hajj Al-Mabrur brings no reward less than Heaven.”

Equivalent to Jihad for some Muslims_ Hazrat Abu Hurairah (RA) reported that Hazrat Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) stated:

“Jihad of elderly, the young, the weak & the women, is Hajj & Umrah”

Every Muslim should perform the Umrah at least one time of life because it is a Sunnah of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
